Statement of Support for Vanessa Joy

On behalf of United Steelworkers (USW), CUPE, OSSTF, and UGFSEA, we proudly endorse Vanessa Joy for a seat on the University of Guelph Board of Governors.

Vanessa has demonstrated unwavering commitment to equity, inclusion, and workers’ rights across the University community. As a dedicated staff member, experienced union leader, and passionate advocate, she has worked tirelessly to support and protect employees across campuses, including those at Ridgetown and research stations. Her leadership in building coalitions, advancing fair workplace policies, and fostering meaningful change makes her an ideal candidate to represent the interests of staff, students, and faculty at the governance level.

The Board of Governors plays a crucial role in overseeing the University’s governance, financial sustainability, and strategic direction. Vanessa’s expertise in business, human resources, and leadership — combined with her lived experience and advocacy — will bring a much-needed perspective to decision-making processes that directly impact the University’s workforce and wider community.

We strongly support Vanessa’s candidacy and encourage all eligible voters to elect a dedicated, knowledgeable, and principled leader who will advocate for fairness, transparency, and accountability at the highest level of University governance.

In solidarity,
United Steelworkers (USW)
Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE)
Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF)
